DC Councilman Hosts Press Conference on Child Sex Abuse Statute of Limitation Reform

On October 7, 2019, D.C. Councilman David Grosso hosted a press conference alongside Zero Abuse Project CEO Jeff Dion and National Crime Victim Bar Association Director Renee Williams to inform the public about the recent changes to criminal and civil statute of limitations (SOL) of child sex abuse in Washington, D.C. The recent legislation also opened up a two-year civil window for child sex abuse victims that started in May, allowing anyone under the age of 40 to file a claim in a civil court regarding child sex abuse, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred. Similar windows and SOL reforms have been taking place across the country, most notably in New York where there were almost 400 cases were filed in the first day of the window being open alone. The National Crime Victim Bar Association provides referrals for victims to civil attorneys to represent them in these cases. You can find more information about the civil justice system and how to request a referral at victimbar.org. You can find a livestream of the press conference on Councilman Grosso's Twitter page, here.
